ASR International Corp. President announces $20.0 million Worldwide Logistics Support Services Award by GSA

September 28, 2004 - Rao S Anumolu, President and CEO of ASR International Corporation, today announced that GSA has awarded a Worldwide Logistics Support contract to ASR International Corporation. This award is valued at $ 20.0 million over a five (5) year period with three (3) options of five (5) years each. "This award recognizes ASR's ability to globally provide cost-effective Engineering, Logistics and Information Technology support services to our customers", Rao said. This award will further enhance ASR's contribution to Homeland Security, which has already been recognized by the US Congress, and several other agencies such as US Postal Service, Department of Defense, Department of Transportation, Department of Energy, etc.

ASR is a Management and Technical Support Services firm dedicated to providing Engineering/Scientific, Technical and Administrative support services to government agencies worldwide. These services facilitate agencies' response to evolutionary influences and mandates and enable them to continuously improve their mission performance. Our professional staff has worldwide experience in providing Logistics support services. Our experience and ability to assemble diverse teams and technologies allows us to rapidly respond to each customer's unique circumstances and provide them with best-in-class solutions.

ASR's expert professionals understand the present complexity and future uncertainty of Federal product and process development initiatives. We understand that agencies are facing increasing pressure from the public and Congress to reduce costs, cut bureaucracy, and increase service quality. To deliver these results, Federal agencies are re-evaluating their missions, visions, strategies, and programs in light of future funding projections. Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) professionals are on the threshold of yet more significant changes to Logistics and the environments in which they must operate. Acquisition reforms and new Logistics requirements are being imposed on both mature military and off-the-shelf systems for which the Logistics professionals had no involvement in design or development. That has been compounded by important requirements prescribed in the new MIL-PRF-49506 and the new MILHDBK-502 guidelines. In short, the scope of responsibilities for Logistics is increasing, the rules continue to change, and organizational structures are impacted as a result of reduced Government funding.

Businessman pushes reverse outsourcing

Newsday March 28, 2004
Rao S. Anumolu tried outsourcing and found the
lower labor costs weren't worth the hassle.

The owner of ASR International Corp. has returned work to the United States in the past three to five years that was being performed in India and Great Britain. He discovered that by changing how his technology-services company operates he could narrow the gap between wages paid domestically and overseas.

Since then Anumolu has urged other U.S. companies to look inward for cost savings before looking abroad. "My approach has been to ask, 'Can we do what we have to in the U.S.A.?'" he said in an interview. "The answer is, yes, we can do it better, faster and cheaper right here with a marginal difference in the costs," compared with going offshore.

Anumolu was born in India, a major outsourcing center, and his advocacy of repatriating offshore jobs has caught the attention of local politicians, universities and groups representing technology workers. Some described the 60-year-old executive as a crusader and path breaker.

"His company did outsourcing and stopped ... They are an example to others that you don't have to send IT [information technology] jobs to India," said Barbara Viola, president of the Long Island chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals.

ASR, which takes its name from Anumolu's initials, provides computer software, engineering and other technical services to government and companies such as Northrop Grumman and Boeing. It employs 500 people across the country with some working from their homes and about 25 based at the headquarters in Hauppauge.

Anumolu acknowledged his attitudes toward outsourcing have been influenced by a multimillion-dollar contract that ASR won three years ago to help with inspection of vehicles, boats, aircraft and trains as part of a homeland-security program. "You cannot outsource defense products. You don't want to give away your technology," he said.

For a time, ASR employed about 24 people overseas, split evenly between India and England. But Anumolu found that the foreign engineers "weren't on the same wavelength" as their U.S. colleagues, leading to communication problems. "We decided to bring the work back, to do reverse outsourcing," he added.

ASR also is encouraging Indian companies to establish a U.S. presence. When Satyam Computer Services Ltd. opened a software development office six years ago in New Jersey, its first outside India, Anumolu attended the ceremonies and pledged to spend $1 million with the new facility.

Still, he hasn't ruled out exporting work altogether. Outsourcing, he said, should be done judiciously such as with projects requiring around-the-clock work. For example, ASR recently did some work in India for Rolls-Royce, though the project was managed from Long Island.

"Reverse outsourcing should be our goal," he said. "If you send the bread and butter of this country, engineering jobs, over there, then what are you left with? Nothing."

US Congress honors Rao Anumolu, CEO of ASR International Corp.

Congressional Award Presentation

Congressional Record

Speech of Carolyn McCarthy

IANS [ The Economic Times, SUNDAY, AUGUST 03, 2003 12:23:37 AM ]

In a rare gesture, an Indian American CEO whose company is engaged in providing first-rate security systems to the Homeland Security Department was recognized by the US Congress.

New York Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, Democrat, took the initiative to make a special mention in the House of Representatives of Anumolu Rao, president and CEO of ASR International of Hauppauge, New York, and the work his firm has done.

Rao told IANS: "I am proud that an Indian American owned company has been chosen for this. In fact I feel it is not just me but the whole Indian American community that has been honored with the recognition given to ASR."

Since its inception in 1986, ASR International has developed cost effective technology and systems to protect the United States' airports, waterways, railroads and highways. Most recently, ASR International produced the "Safety/Security Assurance System" to further support efforts of the Homeland Security Department in a comprehensive and cost effective manner.

McCarthy also hosted a reception to honor Rao in Rayburn House last week where she said: "Rao has been a shining example of what it means to be a successful businessman, a good neighbor, a caring and generous individual and certainly a loyal and patriotic American citizen.

"Rao is known by so many for his work as president and CEO of ASR International and the service to this country that ASR has performed, particularly in the area of homeland security. He is also known throughout the engineering and defense communities for his insight and forward thinking in those areas.

"I mentioned that Rao is also a good neighbor. When my office was looking for financial help to get care packages sent to our troops in Iraq, it was Rao who stepped forward with a sizeable contribution for that effort."

The Congresswoman also presented to Rao a copy of the remarks she made to the House of Representatives to highlight "the great contributions he has made to Long Island, New York and the United States of America".

This is not the first time Rao has been recognized for his efforts. In 1993, he received the Business Excellence Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration for his work in the field of defense.

"I ask my colleagues to join with me to express our gratitude to Anumolu for his exemplary work and dedication to the safety and protection of all Americans. His many accomplishments have helped make the U.S. a safe place for all," McCarthy said.

ASR International has got awards from prestigious organizations like the American Society of Quality, American Management Association and the National defense Industrial Association, she said.

Rao said his company could not have come into the limelight without the efforts made by McCarthy, for whom he said had great respect and admiration.

Rao said ASR is a management and technical support services consulting firm dedicated to providing engineering/scientific, technical and administrative support services to government agencies.

Those who attended the reception included Congressman Frank Pallone, Democrat from New Jersey and founder of the Congressional India Caucus, and Ajay Swarup, political affairs minister in the Indian embassy.

Rao came to Chicago in 1969 for higher studies. Earning a M.S. in industrial engineering and a MBA, he enrolled in various courses at defense Systems Management College, Harvard University and other esteemed institutions.

ASR International Corp. assessed at SEI CMMI Level 3

Hauppauge, New York, January 5, 2004 - ASR International Corp. (ASR) today announced that it has been assessed at Level 3 under the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), instituted by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). SEI is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the US Department of Defense and operated by Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. The assessment was carried out by lead Appraiser Warwick Adler from New York based Reuters Ltd.

The CMMI Version 1.1 is the latest release from SEI and integrates four bodies of knowledge: Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Integrated Product and Process Development and Supplier Sourcing.

Mr. Rao Anumolu (right), President & CEO of ASR
Mr. Warwick Adler (left), Lead Assessor from Reuters Ltd.

The purpose of CMMI is to provide guidance for improving an organization’s processes and its ability to manage the development, acquisition and maintenance of products and services. CMM Integration places proven approaches into a structure that helps an organization appraise its organizational maturity or process area capability, establish priorities for improvement and implement these improvements and thus raise its levels of quality.

Commenting on the achievement, ASR’s President and CEO Rao S Anumolu said: “Achieving CMMI Maturity Level 3 is an important milestone in ASR’s commitment to success through excellence. CMMI along with our well established ISO 9001:2001 quality processes further strengthens ASR’s commitment to deliver high quality services including Engineering, Quality Assurance and Information Technology Support Services to ASR’s client base of Fortune 500 companies and Government agencies. We will continue to deliver services which consistently exceed customer expectations in a timely and cost-effective manner.”

Mr. Warwick Adler, Lead Appraiser Reuters Ltd., said” The SCAMPI (Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement) Class A Appraisal, that ASR underwent, shows both - the extensive process coverage and the management commitment to quality. I was impressed with the customer oriented culture that permeates at all levels within ASR. By embracing both CMMI and ISO 9001:2000, ASR has demonstrated its capabilities to deliver high quality services to its clients worldwide.”

Anumolu's company praised on House floor for helping boost homeland security
‘They didn't honor us because we are an Indian or minority firm, but because of the work we are doing for the nation's defense’

US News August 1, 2003

In an unprecedented gesture, Vijayawada-born Rao S Anumolu and his company ASR International have been honored on Capitol Hill for helping to boost homeland security.

This is the first time since 9/11 that a private company, let alone an Indian-American firm, has been so honored.

Anumolu's support to the defense needs of the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security impressed Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, New York Democrat so much she not only praised him and his firm on the House floor, but also hosted a special reception in his honor at the Rayburn House Office Building in July 16.

Expressing her 'deep appreciation for and recognition of his tireless efforts in support of our nation's defense,' McCarthy told the House as president and CEO of ASR International Corporation, Anumolu ‘has assisted the Department of Defense -in its fight to protect our homeland since the attack on our country- on September 11 and particularly during the Iraqi war.'

Since ASR's conception in 1986, the company ‘has developed cost effective technology and systems to protect our nation's airports, waterways, railroads and highways.’ Most recently, she said, ‘ASR International has developed the Safety/Security, Assurance System in order to further support our efforts at Homeland Security in a comprehensive and cost-effective manner,’ she noted.

This was ‘not the first time Mr. Anumolu has been recognized for his efforts,' she said, and pointed out that in 1993, he had received the Business Excellence Award from the US Small Business Administration for his work in the field of defense‘Now it's my turn to say ‘thanks’.’

She called on her colleagues in Congress to ‘join with me in expressing our gratitude to Mr. Anumolu for his exemplary work and dedication to the safety and protection of all Americans. His many accomplishments have helped make the US a safe place for all.’

At the reception she hosted, where she presented Anumolu with her remarks on the floor of the House embossed on an award, McCarthy said, 'Rao has been a shining example of what it means to be a successful businessman, a good neighbor, a caring and generous individual and a loyal and patriotic American citizen.'

‘I mentioned that Rao is also a good neighbor. When my office was looking for financial help to get care packages sent to our troops in Iraq, it was Rao who stepped forward with a sizable contribution for that effort,’ McCarthy told the more than 50 people present, the majority who had come in, a bus from New York to attend the reception.

Her sentiments were echoed by Congressman Frank Pallone, New Jersey Democrat, founder of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans who also was on hand to join in the celebration.

Clearly overwhelmed by the praise, Anumolu thanked McCarthy and all the others present profusely, and said, “I am proud an Indian-American owned company has been chosen for this. In fact I feel it is not just me but the whole Indian American community that has been honored with the recognition given to ASR"

But “I share this honor with all Indians abroad as well as in India because this is the first time I believe they have given this kind of thing by Congress. I feel really good about it.”

He said McCarthy had taken the initiative of her own volition to recognize him in Congress even though he was not a constituent of hers.

“She is not my Congresswoman, but when she and the other saw the work we are doing, there was a natural interest throughout the country and one thing led to another. She was really excited that we are contributing to homeland security and happened to be a New York-based company.”

“And with all the problems in New York in terms of security and so on, here we were doing this kind of work to help in homeland security and we are doing it right in her backyard. So she took the initiative to recognize us saying this is the kind of work we need from industry,” Anumolu said.

Besides Pallone and Ajay Swarup, Minister, Political, who represented Ambassador Lalit Mansingh at the event, others on hand to congratulate Anumolu included Joseph Battaglia, President and CEO, Telephonics Corporation of New York; Dr Azad Anand, Chairman, Long Island Diagnostics; Mohinder Singh Teneja, Director, New Business. Markets, Nassau County; Dr Urmilesh Arya, President, Association of Indians in America, New York chapter; and Satpal Malhotra, President of the India Association of Long Island. Taneja read out a proclamation by Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, that showered kudos on Anumolu and ASR.

Anumolu, 59, an alumnus of Vaisakh University College from where he received his BA in mechanical engineering, came to the US in 1969 for graduate studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

“They didn't honor us because we are an Indian company or a minority firm, but purely because of the kind of work we are doing for the nation's defense and homeland security,” he said.
